About Pink Ribbon Foundation

(Reg. Charity No. 1080839)

The Pink Ribbon Foundation is a grant making trust with a mission to fund projects and provide financial support to UK charities which relieve the needs of people who are suffering from, have been affected by breast cancer, or who work to advance the understanding of breast cancer and its early detection and treatment.

There are a large number of such charities in the UK, each as deserving as the next. Many of the charities supported are the smaller ones, which operate on a shoestring.

The Pink Ribbon Foundation has very little infrastructure.

It relies on the hard work given by Trustees, interested parties and its Patrons. This is done in order to maximise the amount, which goes to the charities that benefit from the funds raised.

Every year the Foundation invites charities in the UK to apply for a grant in order to help them continue their vital work or to fund one off projects. Some of the many charities who have benefitted from a grant from the Foundation include:

  • The Haven
  • Cancerkin
  • Action Against Breast Cancer
  • Farleigh Hospice
  • The Primrose Centre
  • Cancer Research UK
  • Macmillan Cancer Support
  • Helen Rollason Cancer Charity

“Our ground-breaking work into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer has seen survival rates double over the last 40 years. This would not be possible without the help of supporters such as the Pink Ribbon Foundation” – Cancer Research UK

“We are very grateful for the support we have received from the Pink Ribbon Foundation over a number of years. It has helped make a significant difference to the provision of care and support available to people who are diagnosed with breast cancer in the Salford area each year.” – Macmillan Cancer Support, Salford Manchester

“On behalf of nurses, patients and families we would like to thank the Pink Ribbon Foundation for their generosity in supporting this crucial service.” – Marie Curie Cancer Care

Who started the pink ribbon for Breast Cancer Awareness Month?

1991

Charlotte Hayley, who had battled breast cancer, introduced the concept of a peach coloured breast cancer awareness ribbon. She attached them to cards saying, “The National Cancer Institute’s annual budget is 1.8 billion US dollars, and only 5 percent goes to cancer prevention. Help us wake up our legislators and America by wearing this ribbon.

Haley was strictly grassroots, handing the cards out at the local supermarket and writing prominent women, everyone from former First Ladies to Dear Abby. Her message spread by word of mouth. Haley distributed thousands of these cards.

1992

The cosmetics industry got on board to promote breast cancer awareness with the help of Evelyn Lauder of Estée Lauder Cosmetics and Alexander Penney, the editor-in-chief of Self magazine. When Evelyn Lauder and Alexander Penney were working on their breast cancer awareness promotion, they liked Charlotte Hayley’s concept of giving ribbons to promote the support of breast cancer awareness. Lauder, Penney, and Hayley worked together to come up with the pink ribbon symbol for breast cancer awareness.

Next, Penney learned it was impractical to pin a ribbon onto each cover of Self , as she had hoped, so she called Evelyn Lauder, of Estee Lauder Companies to ask for help. “Lets give these out at Estee Lauder counters,” was her enthusiastic response.

The pink ribbon has now become a well-known symbol of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the UK as well as the US and other countries around the world.
