Let’s. (But don’t tell them we did!).
Fun facts about Thanksgiving
Did you know that…
The first Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621, and it lasted not one but three days! Now, those pilgrims did know how to party! (But so do we!).
Thanksgiving only became a national holiday in 1863. Can you believe it took two hundred years for the tradition to become official? Crazy. And you know how this came about? A lady called Sarah Joseph Hale wrote regular letters to the presidents (three presidents in total) for seventeen years until President Lincoln finally agreed to make Thanksgiving a national holiday. And you know who this lady was? She’s the person who wrote the classic song ‘Mary had a little lamb’! Isn’t that a neat little link? (Feel free to impress your friends and family with that).
The Thanksgiving feast we all know and love today might be all about the turkey, but can you believe there was no turkey on the table when the tradition first started? Historians state that other meat was on the menu. This might have included deer or venison, ducks, geese, oysters, lobster, eel, and fish. A bit different, right? And the pilgrims probably ate pumpkins (but no pumpkin pies), and no mashed potatoes or cranberry relish (although they probably ate cranberries).
Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird, not the eagle. (Now that would have been a bit awkward, wouldn’t it, especially considering that Americans eat 46 million turkeys each year for Thanksgiving!).
And last but not least? Do you know why Thanksgiving is still celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November? President Lincoln was the first to set the date, and in 1939 President Roosevelt tried to move it up by a week to help the shopping season during the Depression. But the tradition didn’t stick, and the national holiday went back to the fourth Thursday of November with Black Friday being introduced much more recently on the following day. And no one’s tried to move it ever since!
Now, if all this isn’t going to impress your friends and family during our afternoon tea bus tour, we don’t know what will!
(You’re welcome.)
And here’s that link to book again.
